STEPS FOR FINDING MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

If you're a family that's not going to get needs based aid, it's important to maximize your efforts to find merit scholarships as your best source of free money. So I recently did a google search to see what information was available to help families find colleges that can offer their students merit scholarships.

My search was "how to find merit scholarships" and here's what I found....
The top result, from PrepScholar, talks about HOW to get a merit scholarship but not how to FIND merit scholarships.

That's a big difference.

Your student can work hard through high school, have the grades, scores, and activities but if you don't apply to the "right" schools that can offer your student money, you and your student will be out of luck. That's why it's so important to do all the research now, BEFORE admissions deadlines. Once deadlines have passed, your student can't get money from a school he or she hasn't applied to.

A quote from another article said "... it is hard to determine ahead of time which colleges will give your child merit money." That's not good news.

While another article said "Encourage your child to apply to several schools where his grades and test scores put him in the top quarter of the applicant pool." Good advice, but where can you find those schools where your student is in the top 25th percentile?

We think finding merit scholarships, and colleges that are more generous with their money, is such an important topic, that we're hosting a masterclass webinar devoted solely to this topic.

 How To Find Merit Scholarships
Tuesday, November 14th at 8:30pm EST

In this webinar, we’ll show you how to do the research to uncover the colleges that can be more generous to your student. We’ll help you answer the following questions….

How can you determine a college’s generosity before your student applies?

What schools are likely to give your student the most merit scholarships?

What is the Common Data Set and how can it help in your college search research?

What are full ride and full tuition scholarships?

Do only high achieving students receive merit scholarships?

Do colleges offer better merit scholarships for freshman vs. upperclassmen?

As part of registering for the webinar, you’ll receive your own copy of the Full Tuition/Full Ride Scholarship List, created by Wendy Nelson. This list was recently updated, as of September 2017. We'll show you how to use this list to search for automatic scholarships that are offered to all students who meet the criteria, find competitive scholarships where your student competes against others, find scholarships for special talents like music, art and dance, scholarships for National Merit Finalists/Semi-Finalists, Valedictorians, and more.

As always, our mission is to help families understand the financial aid process and ways to pay for college. We believe families need to become educated consumers of higher ed to make more informed decisions and help their students and themselves avoid student debt.

STILL FILLING OUT FAFSA or CSS PROFILE? NEED HELP?

Our recent webinars were a tremendous hit in helping families understand what information they need to fill out FAFSA and CSS Profile, what mistakes to avoid, and how colleges and the government use FAFSA and CSS Profile information to determine need for offering financial aid.

You can still gain access to both webinar recordings, along with the list of questions submitted and reviewed in each webinar.

In addition, download the list of questions others submitted to the webinar, along with answers.
