Review of September and new topics for October

What we covered during the main session last month (September):

Getting off to a good year:
  • Start thinking about leadership opportunities within school activities

Letters of recommendation:
  • Students should ask teachers at the end of Junior year…
  • During the school year, it’s important for students to get to know teachers beyond just the classroom. Stop in 5 min early to class a few times a month to chat with the teacher and have conversations about topics other than their academic subject (i.e. get to know each other on a personal level)
AP, IB and Honors classes:
  • We talked about the difference between each of these 3 classes, when it’s right (or wrong) to take these classes, and the benefits these classes can have both on college applications as well as once students get to college (money and time saving)
What we covered in the main session this month:
  • October is the time for the PSAT. What it means, when will you get the scores and how do you plan around the results you are expecting?
  • Many senior families are stressed and overwhelmed with their college application process Let’s talk about common mistakes families make and what you can do to avoid them.
In case you missed it, you can click here to watch a replay of this session.

Action items to be aware of in October:
  • Take the PSAT this month
  • Sophomores: narrow down extracurricular activities you’re interested in
  • Juniors: begin taking on leadership positions in clubs and teams at school, and seek out opportunities for leadership and impact outside of school as well (volunteer, community service, jobs, hobbies, groups, teams, etc)
  • Juniors: if you’re not yet satisfied with your SAT or ACT score, continue studying and sign up for a future exam date to take the test again (or for the first time if you haven’t yet)
  • Plan your college visits now for this fall and even consider identifying dates in the spring to do the same. Many times such as Teacher’s Convention weekend (not at all schools in all states), President’s Weekend, Spring Break, etc. These are some of the busiest times and colleges get overbooked. The earlier you can book these trips the better.

Reminder for how to get the most out of the concierge service:
  • The 1st Wednesday of every month will be the monthly coaching session. Office hours vary so check the google sheet.

  • Use the Facebook group to share information with one another, and ask questions on your mind (we’ll look here before office hours).
  • We send reminder emails the day of monthly sessions and office hours. Please add "debbie@road2college.com" to your email address book if you aren't receiving our emails.
  • We've created a google sheet with the calendar of all the sessions and topics. In addition, there is a tab in the google sheet labeled "Videos" that has links to all the recorded sessions.
