Hi All! Thanks to Mariya for posting the lovely comment above in our FB group.

As May begins, here's a summary of what was covered last month:

Reminder for how to get the most out of the concierge service:

  • The 1st Wednesday of every month will be the monthly coaching session. Office hours will be the 4th Wednesday of every month.
  • During office hours, we’ll answer any general questions that we’ve received via emails or posted in the FB groups.
  • Use the Facebook group to share information with one another, and ask questions on your mind (we’ll look here before office hours).
  • We send reminder emails the day of monthly sessions and office hours. Please add "debbie@road2college.com" to your email address book if you aren't receiving our emails.
  • We've created a google sheet with the calendar of all the sessions and topics. In addition, there is a tab in the google sheet labeled "Videos" that has links to all the recorded sessions.
  • We really want your feedback and will be sending a survey after each session to hear what you have to say. It's very short (4 questions). We want to make sure you are getting what you need out of the service and your feedback will help us continue to improve things.

What we covered during the first session this month:

The importance of choosing a major/focus early on
  1. The earlier students narrow this down, the more time they have to expand the narrative through extracurricular activities, volunteer, community impact, leadership, jobs, internships, class choice, letters of recommendation, etc.
  2. This will guide/help students narrow down their official college list when it comes time to visit campuses and apply to schools.

How to choose a major/focus
  • Answer the questions in the document that Marisa provided to identify potential options.
  • Conduct informal, informational interviews with people in industries that the student may have a potential interest in.
  • Participate in job shadowing and/or internship experiences to get a real feel for what it’s like to work in a certain industry.

How to make the most of summer
  • Official school programs do not give you a leg up with admissions. However, it can be a good way to get a feel for a particular school if students are thinking about applying there in the future.
  • Taking college level courses at community colleges or nearby colleges can give a leg up with admissions.
  • Summer is a great time to evolve interests, show leadership, volunteer, and make an impact in the community….students should participate in the things they wouldn’t have time to do during the school year!
  • It’s perfectly acceptable to give extra time to sports, music or other interests.

What we’ll be covering during the first session this month:
  • College visits (when to go, where to go, what to ask, what to do, and how to make the most of your time visiting colleges…)
  • SAT/ACT study timing & different methods to prepare.

Action items to be aware of in May:
  • Plan out summer activities and involvements.
  • Register for SAT Subject Tests (if applicable).
  • Sophomores: decide if you will take the SAT or the ACT, decide on which method you will use to study for the test, and purchase/sign up for study method for this summer.

The May monthly coaching session is tonight at 7pm EST.
