LEGAL DOCUMENTS AND MENTAL HEALTH
Last week the NYTimes published a heart wrenching article about a student, at Hamilton college, that was under emotional distress. The college was aware of the situation, yet failed to notify the parents. Sadly, the student committed suicide.

The article didn't mention whether the family had filed FERPA waiver papers with the college, but as a precaution for families with students turning 18 and going off to college, fill out FERPA waivers, HIPPA, medical and durable powers of attorney, Hopefully you will never have to use any of these documents, but if a situation arises, you'll be prepared.

What the NYTimes story also brings to mind is the need to have open conversations with your college bound student about their mental health. 75% of lifetime mental health conditions begin in the late teen years and early 20s.
