Subject: Go for the Gold in College!

How the quality of life in college can lead to a happy post-college experience.

Meet Me, Meet My High School

A school profile is an often overlooked aspect of the application process.

These documents are often written by the high school and uploaded by a college counselor when they send your child’s application to colleges and universities.

It’s worth understanding this document and reading the profile with your child to understand more about how admissions officers will view your child’s high school.

The profile is especially important to homeschooled students, as one homeschool parent stated...

"As a homeschool parent, I think this is even more important for our records. I have a one-page profile that includes everything mentioned in the article as well as our philosophy and an overview of how that particular child uniquely utilized the many options available. With so much wonderful freedom with homeschool, I do feel it’s our duty to help college admissions officers understand what we mean when we say 'homeschool,' and know we weren’t simply twiddling our thumbs." ;)

How a Positive College Experience Impacts Your Post-College Life

Not everyone has a great college experience, but everyone should make an effort to achieve that, since according to a recent Gallup survey, the quality of college experiences were the key to success and happiness in life after college.

When we talk about the things that can make college life better, keep in mind, we're not really talking about "things."

A nice dorm room is great, and a rock wall is great too (we think), but the survey was predicated on "The Big Six" experiences that can make a difference in a student's college career, like finding a mentor.

More Thoughts on Loans: Research, Shop, and Compare

The first order of business:

Make sure your student ALWAYS maxes out the federal student loans.

If you still need more, you'll want to compare private student loan rates to the Parent PLUS loan, which is 6.28% plus a 4.228% origination fee, equaling an APR of 7.25% (the interest rate to compare private loans rates to).

Still need more $$$?

Follow our steps (above) for shopping for rates of private student loans.

You can check with Credible, a marketplace that makes it easier to get rates from multiple lenders, but not all lenders are represented, so also go directly to lender sites.

LENDER I VARIABLE RATES (APR)

Ascent (Cosigned) 1.82% - 10.32%*

SoFi 1.12% - 11.23%*

CommonBond 3.79% - 9.35% *

College Ave 1.04% - 11.98%*

Citizens Bank 1.04% - 10.25%*

Sallie Mae 1.13% - 11.23%*

LendKey as low as 1.49%*

*Variable rates as of July 28, 2021. Rates are based on automatic payment discounts of 0.25 percentage points.

And last, but certainly not least...

After shopping around and before you commit to a lender, check Juno to see if they can beat your lowest rate. They've negotiated better rates based on giving the "winning" lender higher volume.
