To prep or not to prep for the PSATs?

For most high school students the first encounter with standardized tests comes with the PSATs. If you're a first time parent of a high school student, don't feel badly if you're not familiar with this test, you can get up to speed in Understanding The PSAT.

The results of the PSAT, as taken in 11th grade, can translate into scholarships, the biggest and most noteworthy being the National Merit Scholarship. Some students are now starting to take the PSAT in 9th grade to use as a baseline to compare against 10th grade PSAT results, and to determine if your student has a shot at a National Merit Scholarship from 11th grade results.

Do what's best for your student, but if money and merit scholarships are something your family will need to pay for college, it can't hurt to start early. Check out the list of colleges offering full ride or full tuition scholarships to National Merit Finalists.
FALL WORKSHOPS

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP WORKSHOP: SATURDAY, 9/22 at 1pm EST.
This workshop is for families looking to find colleges that can offer their student merit scholarships. We'll be using our College Data Spreadsheet to understand what data to use to filter, sort and compare schools to pinpoint the colleges where your student has a higher likelihood of receiving money.

CSS PROFILE WORKSHOP: SUNDAY, 9/23 at 8:30pm EST.
Whether we like it or not, the financial aid season is upon us. So to help ease the pain, we're offering a workshop on filling out the CSS Profile. We decided to schedule the CSS Profile workshop before the FAFSA workshop because of the importance of making sure the two forms have the same information. And let's face it, the CSS Profile is just more complicated to fill out.

This workshop will be lead by Christen O'Connor, Associate Director of Financial Aid at Dartmouth College.

FAFSA WORKSHOP: SUNDAY, 10/7 AT 8:30PM EST.
This workshop will walk step by step through the online FAFSA form and will address questions related to how your EFC is calculcated, which assets are included and identified as parent vs. student assets, should you use the IRS DRT, what documentation do you need if you are selected for verification and more.

This workshop will be lead by Luanne Lee, a certified College Financial Planning Specialist with over 13 years of college planning experience in the financial services industry.
