Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Especially when it comes to college essays.

  • "What should I write about?"
  • "Is the topic appropriate?
  • "Am I showing admissions something different than what's on the rest of my college application?"
  • "Is it enjoyable to read?"

All this angst is understandable when one doesn't know what to expect of the process.

How do you even know how important the college essay is in the admissions decision?

Check the Common Data Set (CDS) for the schools your student is applying to.

Here's an example of the CDS for Occidental College.

As you can see, Occidental gives equal weight to the application essay as it does a student's GPA and academic rigor. They even consider the essay more important than test scores.
If your student is applying to schools that consider the essay important then this is their chance to put a face on their application and stand out from others.

To help families with essays we collaborated with Anna Ren, a college admissions pro, IECA member and founder of Elite Advantage Prep, to offer two online college essay workshops.
  • If you want a great overview of what you need to know about the college essay, what makes a good one, and how to help your student then join our College Essay Jumpstart Workshop.

See below for details on both workshops.

Two College Essay Workshops in August!
College Essay Jumpstart
When: Sunday, August 11th at 8 - 9pm EST
This workshop is intended for parents and students to attend together. (Bonding time!!)

Anna will review the fundamentals of what makes an essay compelling, show how to identify “hot” topics for your student, discuss the best ways to review and provide feedback, and walk through creating a plan to make sure your student finishes their essays without driving you crazy.

Find Your Voice College Essay Workshop
When: Sundays, August 18th AND August 25th at 7:30 - 9pm EST

LIMITED TO 15 STUDENTS!

This workshop includes two sessions, with enrollment limited to 15 students. Students must have also attended the Jumpstart workshop.

Anna will work with students to brainstorm unique topics and real-life stories to help reflect who your student truly is.

In this multi-session workshop, Anna will show students how to use writing techniques, including anecdotes, dialogue, and sensory detail that will help create powerful essays.

In the second session, Anna will review essay drafts, while students self-edit and polish essays to ensure they are engaging, meaningful and memorable.

All participants will have access to a private Facebook group till September 1st for additional support.
