Key Takeaways About Covid's Impact on College Admissions

If you joined our Facebook Live Sunday night, your head might be spinning from all the numbers we talked about, but here's a quick recap:
  • Overall college enrollment declined this year with the greatest declines from low-income, minority, and rural high school students.
  • Test optional policies drove significant application increases at more selective schools. At some schools, students not submitting test scores were admitted at a lower rate (in early admission) than those with test scores.
  • Although fewer students applied to college, there was an increased number of applications sent overall, implying that students who applied, applied to more colleges than in past years. With more uncertainty than normal, students cast a wider net.
  • More students took Gap Years in 2020 and are enrolling back in 2021. It's unclear if colleges will increase the number of students accepted this year (or not) to accommodate Gap Year students.
  • Applications were also up at larger state universities and larger schools in general. Smaller schools tended to have a decrease in applicants.
