Starting out small has proved successful for Oshkosh baker

OSHKOSH – Many startup businesses begin small – getting their start in the garages and basements of the folks behind them. In the case of Thunderbird Bakery, it was in the owners’ driveway – in a handmade, wood-fired oven, to be exact.

Trent Wester and his wife, Lizz Redman said they first sold Wester’s sourdough bread at the Oshkosh Farmers’ Market in 2018 – a step the couple described as an outgrowth of their desire to start a business together after moving from New Mexico to Redman’s hometown of Oshkosh.

Though Redman has a master’s degree in health and human development with an emphasis in sustainable food systems and had helped launch several food start-ups, the duo said it was a new venture for them both...

ASHWAUBENON – That’s a wrap for New North, Inc.’s 2022 pitch contests.

Eight finalists from four qualifying events throughout Northeast Wisconsin – Audible, Fast Pitch, LevelUp and Accelerate Sheboygan County – pitched their business concepts one last time at the NEW Launch Alliance Pitch Event, held Dec. 1 at TitletownTech in Green Bay.

“We have so many great new business ideas – across a wide number of industries – underway here in the New North region,” Barb LaMue, president and CEO of New North, said. “We have held the pitch competition for several years, and I have to say each year the range of business ideas and quality of the presentations continues to get stronger.”

Fond du Lac Entrepreneur Kean O’Brien, the brains behind Hang 10 Poké – a restaurant offering a variety of fresh poké bowls that cater to different tastes and provide a fresh alternative to fast-food and grab-and-go options – took home first place and the top prize of $2,000.....

Starting fall 2023, Lawrence University – a private liberal arts college and conservatory of music located in Appleton – will offer a new business and entrepreneurship major built through the lens of the liberal arts with a focus on preparing future innovators.

Three new businesses set to serve the community in downtown Two Rivers

TWO RIVERS – Business will soon be booming in Two Rivers as three new establishments will soon be open in the city’s downtown area.

The first to open will be Cool City Brewing Company, located across the street from City Hall. The business is set to open in a few weeks.

In addition to making their own beer, there will also be a restaurant and coffee shop equipped with a drive-thru. Founding partner Gina Krahn of Wine Not LLC, the company developing Cool City, says, “We really felt [a restaurant] was a need here in the community.”...

Breath of fresh air: High school class project becomes thriving natural air freshener business

FOND DU LAC -- When writers want to create a moment of pause in a sentence, they insert a comma.

That feeling of rest inspired the name of an air freshener business created by North Fond du Lac High School students Ayden Fowler and Lily Goeckerman. “The traditional comma is a pause,” explains Fowler. “And when you smell something nice, you’re like ‘ahhhh!’ So Commah (same pronunciation as comma) is taking a moment to breathe.”

Commah is a line of plant-based air fresheners, essential oils and diffusers. Now seniors, Fowler and Goeckerman came up with the idea as sophomores in a business class called INCubatorEdu...


New game venue in Green Bay offers tournaments and a fun space for gamers

GREEN BAY − Gamers of all sorts have a new home in downtown.

Rogue Games, which recently opened in the old Green Bay Press-Gazette distribution building at 533 E. Walnut St., offers a space for card and board games as well as console gaming.

The building is also the home of Allouez Rare Coin, which operates under the same roof, with a separate entrance on Monroe Avenue.

At Rogue Games, people come every day to play in tournaments, with friends or simply watch....

Global startup accelerator Founder Institute to launch in Wisconsin in 2023

A startup accelerator program started in Silicon Valley that has chapters around the world is launching in Wisconsin next year.

Founder Institute Wisconsin will run a 15-week accelerator program for pre-seed startups, with the first cohort scheduled to start in March 2023. It will be a primarily virtual program with optional opportunities to meet in person, Founder Institute Wisconsin co-director Jeffrey Daniel said.

The effort to bring Founder Institute to Wisconsin spun out of the nonprofit Visioning a Greater Racine, which runs Tech-Prize entrepreneurship competitions...

High school students compete in culinary throwdown at FVTC

GRAND CHUTE  -- High School students will make their way to Grand Chute for a culinary throwdown.

FOX 11's Emily Deem spent Friday morning at Fox Valley Technical College to learn all about the big food competition.

Students from across northeast Wisconsin will make their way to FVTC for High School Culinary Throwdown.

Organizers say students compete in either a burger category or a cake category. FVTC culinary instructors are the judges and students are competing for a scholarship to FVTC...
