Fostering workplace belonging: Companies leverage ERGs to attract, retain, support employees

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) – also known as workplace affinity groups or employee business resource groups – are nothing new.

In fact, Rebecca Deschane, vice president of talent development at New North Inc., said the concept itself dates back more than six decades. “Historically, ERGs were started at Xerox in response to racial tensions in the early- to mid-1960s,” she said.

The focus remains the same – offer an opportunity for people with common identities, backgrounds or interests in the workplace to come together to connect, engage and build affinity within the organization.

An international aircraft producer is in the midst of a $55 million investment in the Fox Valley that could add 200 jobs to the community.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. is on schedule to open a new state-of-the-art aircraft paint hangar at Appleton International Airport in 2023, after breaking ground on the project earlier this year.

The company builds, designs, outfits and services business aircraft. In a statement, Gulfstream President Mark Burns said the new facility is part of a company-wide expansion that aims to address current demand and future growth potential....

MANITOWOC – Though he grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Michael Jenkins – the new CEO of Orion Energy Systems (Nasdaq: OESX) – said he has spent much of his adult working career as a Wisconsinite.

“Even though I was raised in Illinois, my folks were from Wisconsin, and we’ve always been (Green Bay) Packers fans,” he said. “I lived in Wisconsin for 25ish years at this point, and one of the things I've always loved about Wisconsin compared to where I grew up in the Chicago suburbs is the family-friendly nature of the state and the culture.”

Jenkins graduated from Miami University in Ohio in 1992 with a degree in political science, diplomacy and foreign affairs...

ASHWAUBENON — The new Hyvee grocery store at Bay Park Square Mall has created a buzz around Ashwaubenon in recent weeks. But village officials say the store is bringing more than just new shopping and dining options.

They say it's brought a number of economic benefits, too. For starters, the store currently employs about 600 people, not including seasonal positions. Mike Landyut, the Hyvee District Store Director says it's the company's largest location out of over 300 stores.

LITTLE CHUTE – With an eye on the future, Excellerate, a division of Faith Technologies Incorporated (FTI), officially broke ground on a new 385,000-square-foot smart manufacturing facility in the Village of Little Chute.

The facility, which aims to eventually achieve net-zero operations, is expected to be completed by fall 2023, will be located just off Hwy 41 on West Evergreen Dr. and add more than 200 jobs to the Northeast Wisconsin region....

But, a local farm is finding ways to keep its costs down.

Ski Farms in Oconto County had to raise its prices this year, but not by much.

"We were at $45 dollars for under 10 foot and $55 dollars for over ten foot, this year to keep it simple, we just did $52 dollars per tree," says owner Jonathan Szczepanski....

A University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Fox Cities campus student won his own Super Bowl at Lambeau Field, when he was named No. 1 overall draft pick at the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance’s recent Internship Draft Day.

Samuel Dick, of Oshkosh, is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering. He joined more than 150 college students who were showing off interview skills as they vied for internships with area firms. Points were awarded not only on interview skills, but academic standing and extracurricular involvement, with bonus points earns for anyone awarded a company’s Most Valuable Interview...

HOWARD — After a lengthy search, a men's addiction recovery facility has finally found its home in Howard. Adult and Teen Challenge Northeast Wisconsin is in the process of renovating and opening a men's faith-based residential treatment program, the only one of its kind in the Green Bay area.

"It's no secret over the years addiction is growing rampant here in the Northeastern Wisconsin area," Vaushawn Johnson, the program's executive director said. "This program actually came about by a few locals who took notice of that and contacted our national office in Ozark, Missouri and said we need to bring a residential Adult Teen Challenge to the area."..

ST. CLOUD - Maxx Ball, a 10-year-old from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who beat cancer, recently got a behind-the-scenes look at Sargento Foods Inc.’s cheese-making process.

In partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ball and his family traveled to Wisconsin before Thanksgiving, meeting Gov. Tony Evers and visiting the Center for Dairy Research, House on the Rock, Lambeau Field, Road America and Sargento’s Baker Cheese Plant.
