Wisconsin Maritime Museum submarine to be restored with $500k grant
WFRV
MANITOWOC - The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is receiving a $500,000 grant for the dry docking of one of its most popular submarines.
Museum staff says the dry docking of the submarine will allow future generations to enjoy the vessel.
“Cobia‘s been here just over 50 years. She came here in 1970 and has been here in Manitowoc ever since as a submarine memorial and then kind of as the centerpiece of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum,” said Cathy Green, the Executive Director at Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
World War II submarine USS Cobia is set to receive a makeover thanks to the federal grant that will give the museum the opportunity to renovate the national landmark...

Here are 6 of the best places to see fall colors in Manitowoc County this season
MANITOWOC HERALD TIMES
MANITOWOC - In highly unscientific research and during casual conversation, it seems that fall is the favorite time of year among the folks I know.
Much of that has to do with cool, crisp sunny days. And the brilliant yellow, orange and red leaves trees show off before falling to the ground, as the Earth tucks into winter.
What makes leaves turn these wondrous hues, and why are colors better some years than others?
The science behind this treat tells us that leaf color comes from three pigments: chlorophyll (green); carotenoid (yellow, orange and brown); and anthocyanin (red)...

How It's Made: Go behind the scenes at Sheboygan's 3 Sheeps Brewing Company to see how it creates unique Wisconsin brews
SHEBOYGAN PRESS
SHEBOYGAN -
Grant Pauly, brewmaster and owner of 3 Sheeps Brewing Company, 1837 North Ave., said the cool thing about making beer is that the basic process has always been the same.He said it all starts with mixing malt, primarily from barley, with sugar and hot water to convert the starches into sugars.
During the malting process, which can use several malts to get different notes, like honey, cherry and caramel, the husks and grains are recirculated over a filter.
“What happens is the husks compact down onto themselves," he said. "So we're running that water from underneath to the top and it creates almost like a coffee filter...

Ceremonial ribbon cut on Highway 29 interchange
WBAY
BROWN COUNTY - Federal and state highway officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for a new diamond interchange in Brown County. The opening is a relief to nearby businesses.
One of the things federal and state officials highlighted was that this project, which cost more than $25 million, managed to stay on budget and on time.
They say the main reason for the construction of the diamond interchange at Wisconsin Highway 29 and County Highway VV was to address safety issues -- among them, travel speeds. It also brings this portion of Highway 29 in Brown County into compliance with federal highway standards.
The new 29 and County VV interchange creates a connection among the villages of Howard and Hobart and the Oneida Nation...

Kaukauna Utilities, others to help in Florida
WFRV
KAUKAUNA - Utility crews from around the country are on their way to Florida to help in Hurricane Ian’s aftermath. That includes a group from Kaukauna who Local 5 caught up with on Wednesday before crews headed south.
“We’ve been sequestered to send mutual aid assistance down,” manager Eric Miller said.
Part of Miller’s crews will head to central Florida, near Kissimmee. The group will send a bucket truck and a line crew to help restore power.
“It’s not the first time we’ve done this type of thing. Regrettably, it probably won’t be the last either,” said Miller.
When natural disasters strike, it’s common for utility companies to band together, no matter where they are, to help get lights back on...
