MARINETTE -- The U.S. Navy is awarding a $39 million contract modification to Fincantieri Marinette Marine.
FMM received the award in 2020 to build a warship, the initial Constellation-class Frigate, and options for nine additional ships as well as various design and training services.
The contract modification money is intended to be used for construction and design requirements of the Constellation-class Frigates.
The estimated total value of the contract for the frigates is now $5.5 billion...

APPLETON -- An Appleton non-profit hopes a camp it’s hosting will help fill vacancies in manufacturing by training an untapped resource of potential workers.
VPI is a non-profit that already works with individuals who have disabilities or are disadvantaged. When an opportunity arose to continue its mission and help even more people, as well as the manufacturing industry, VPI was on-board.
A group of 10 young adults are part of Inclusion Manufacturing Camp in Appleton.

One year later, Afghan refugee looks back on Taliban takeover

ALLOUEZ -- It's been one year since the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan, and the Taliban took control.
Thousands of refugees fled the country in search of safety, with hundreds relocating here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Afghan refugee Ali Akbar Gholami is one of them. His family is stuck in what used to be his home country.
“They don’t have any hope," Gholami said. "They’ve actually lost their hope.”

Green Bay to host women's Para Ice Hockey tournament

GREEN BAY -- World Para Ice Hockey says it's bringing the first-ever Para Ice Hockey Women's World Challenge to Green Bay this month.
Four teams will compete in a round-robin style tournament Aug. 26 through 28 at the Cornerstone Community Center.
The teams will be from the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, and there will also be a Team World, which will be made up of athletes from different nations.
The organization says this event is the first step to an eventual Women's World Championship. It hopes to expand female participation in Para Ice Hockey worldwide, ultimately having women's Para Ice Hockey recognized in the Paralympics some day...

UW System president announces tuition promise at UW-Green Bay, Oshkosh

GREEN BAY -- The president of the UW System was in Northeast Wisconsin Wednesday to discuss the Wisconsin Tuition Promise at UW-Green Bay and UW Oshkosh.
The initiative starts in fall of 2023. The goal is to help underserved Wisconsin students attend a UW System university without paying tuition or fees. The program hopes to increase the number of residents with a bachelor’s degree from low-to-moderate income families.
The program would be for Wisconsin residents and families earning less than $62,000 a year. Eligible students will be first-time enrollees or transfers. Students must attend full-time and show “sufficient academic progress” each year. They will have to show they were employed at some point during the previous year....
