Celebrating Women's History Month: women pursue careers in welding at NWTC
NBC26
GREEN BAY — Sarah Fischer, welding instructor at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, says Women's History Month is a time to reflect.

"There were a lot of women welders in World War II," she said. "The fact that not too many people even know about that, I think this month, it always seems we reflect and look in the past to see where we can get to in the future.”

Welding wasn’t Fischer’s original career path, but one day, she decided to take the risk and try it.

“I was able to double my income in less than six months," said Fischer. "I had absolutely zero loans, zero school debt, nothing holding me back, and it was something that I just realized that I could do and I was good at it, and I just stuck with it.”

She wants young women to know they can do this too...

Kewaunee awarded $1.75-million for Fisherman's Point
DoorCountyDailyNews.com
A key part of the City of Kewaunee's waterfront redevelopment plan is getting a major boost through the Community Development Block Grant program. The city is getting $1.75-million to acquire, renovate and improve Fisherman's Point. That process would include removing some existing, blighted buildings. Kewaunee Mayor Jason Jelinek says a major focus will be to make the property more accessible by reducing flood risks from rising lake levels.

Mayor Jelinek hopes the Fisherman's Point project will eventually lead to additional grant funding toward the $1.8-million purchase of Salmon Harbor Marina. He believes the project will convince the Economic Development Administration that Salmon Harbor will be an economic boost for Kewaunee...

From job cuts to online commerce, virus reshaped US economy
AP
WASHINGTON (AP) — At first, it was expected to be brief. At least that was the hope.

Instead, a once-in-a-century pandemic has ground on for a year, throwing millions out of work and upending wide swathes of the American economy. Delivery services thrived while restaurants suffered. Home offices replaced downtown offices. Travel and entertainment spending dried up.

The job losses were swift and harsh. But they hardly fell equally across the economy. Black and Hispanic workers fared worse than others. And many women, mostly mothers, felt compelled to quit the workforce to care for children being schooled online from home. Despite the job cuts, Americans as a whole socked away a record level of savings, buoyed by government aid to the unemployed and income that higher-paid workers, hunkered down at home, managed to squirrel away...
