Gap in local resources inspires mom's nonprofit for young girls of color
Green Bay Press Gazette
Rhonda Chandler of De Pere had a goal — to empower and uplift young girls of color (ages 7 to 18) while developing their talents, gifts and leadership skills.

Ann Hartnell, a volunteer with the Green Bay SCORE chapter (www.greenbay.score.org), worked with Chandler as she formed the nonprofit Lovin’ the Skin I’m In.

“Rhonda came to me with this great idea she had been refining for some time," Hartnell said. "Seeing the changes in her daughters acted as a catalyst for her to put the plan in motion. She had a lot of ideas, but did not know where to start. We worked to coalesce her ideas into a plan...

Fond du Lac STEM senior lands patent for fish hook design that doesn't let worms get away
FDL Reporter
FOND DU LAC - It’s the bane of every fishing enthusiast: a fish nibbling the worm off the hook.

Jared Ott knows this only too well from his days spent casting for blue gills, bass and crappies at favorite fishing spots around his hometown.

So it made sense that as the Fond du Lac STEM Academy senior set out brainstorming projects he could work on this school year, the worm dilemma arose.

Students attending the academy are encouraged to get excited about ideas and run with them, said Principal Timothy Scottberg. Currently about 40 high school age students are enrolled in the specialty school that caters to careers in technology and engineering.

The 18-year-old reached out to one of the academy’s mentors, Mercury Marine senior engineer Kevin Anderson, to bounce ideas around. Anderson is one of several mentors in the community who partner with STEM students as a way to encourage a spirit of innovation...

FVTC helps to create app aimed at kids endangered by drug use in their home
WBAY
FOX VALLEY, Wis. (WBAY) - Millions of kids find themselves in households where they’re negatively affected by drug use. Fox Valley Tech is working on a smartphone app that will help families find the resources they need.

Scenes of families dealing with drug use in the home being shot at Fox Valley Technical College’s Public Safety Training facility will be seen across the country. The scenarios are part of smartphone app the Tech is helping to create with The National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children.

“Our definition of drug endangered children are any children that are impacted by parent or caregiver illegal or legal substance misuse. So, the purpose of the app is to provide victims with an easy access to resources and services in their own ZIP Code or geographic area,” says Scott Henderson, executive director of The National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children.

The videos being shot are the first of four phases in the development of the app. They are scenes the estimated 9 million kids impacted by drug use might find themselves in -- in their own homes. “This is a way of engaging them and saying if you’re a person in this situation there is hope, there is help available and here’s how easy it is to find them...

Milwaukee native making rare, same-season 'Shark Tank' encore after sales spike
Wisconsin Inno
Milwaukee native and Milwaukee School of Engineering graduate Matthew Mundt will reappear on the ABC show "Shark Tank" for a second time in the same season, providing an update on the success of his Sleep Pod product.

Mundt and his wife Angie pitched their adaptation on a weighted blanket for the Shark Tank judges, which earned them an impressive $300,000 from sharks Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner for a 20% stake in the company. Mundt originally asked for $150,000 and a 10% stake during the show. Sleep Pod uses four-way stretch material to provide compression, applying gentle pressure that hugs the body. It’s the same science behind weighted blankets,

The episode originally aired Oct. 30 of last year.

Since then, Sleep Pod, part of Mundt's company Hug Sleep, took off. In the first weeks following the broadcast, the company sold out 50,000 units of its inventory. Mundt said he and his wife expected to sell between 3,000 and 4,000 units...
