Months after Wisconsin’s Hmong population celebrated the 45th anniversary of their first arrival in Wisconsin, UW-Oshkosh has approved a Hmong Studies Certificate to deepen understanding of the culture and history of Hmong American people and what their experience says about other global issues.
“I think people assume that Hmong studies is just the study of Hmong culture only,” said Dr. Mai See Thao, who was hired in 2020 to head up the new Hmong Studies program. “But the way that I was trained in the field of Hmong studies is to really look at Hmong studies as this critical field that inquires about the historical, political and social cultural experiences of the Hmong, which is oftentimes very much connected to issues of US imperialism. Having the consequences of war in Southeast Asia, and as well as what it means to be a refugee and how refugees continue on their life post resettlement in the US. The City of Sheboygan is making more money available to local businesses struggling to maintain operations after the effects of the pandemic. The full council is expected to approve a resolution tonight from the Finance and Personnel Committee that will make an additional $200,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funds available to keep small businesses running. The money became available when FEMA picked up a portion of the bill for a nearly $10 million sewer interceptor project. The Finance and Personnel Committee assigned the funding to expand a program begun on January 24th that aided businesses with five or fewer employees. The University of Wisconsin-Madison will extend its Wisconsin Teacher Pledge for another year in an aim to address teacher shortages across the state and nation.
The program within the School of Education pays the equivalent of in-state tuition and fees, as well as testing and licensing costs, for all teacher education students who commit to working three or four years at Wisconsin schools.
“There are significant challenges across the field of education, but we’re looking to the future with a sense of optimism,” said Diana Hess, dean at the School of Education, in a statement. “Our Teacher Pledge program holds great potential for the state of Wisconsin.
