GREEN BAY -- When she attended East High School in Green Bay, Carina Abrego-Koch's 10th grade social studies class was asked to stick a thumbtack into their family's country of origin. Holding the single thumbtack in hand, Abrego-Koch looked from Mexico to Japan, conflicted.

Door County Candle Company creates Ukraine Candle to support war-torn country

DOOR COUNTY -- A Door County business owner with ties to Ukraine is doing what she can to help people in the war torn country. And the reception she’s received, is more than she could have ever imagined.
There are extra sets of hands pouring candles at Door County Candle Company, north of Sturgeon Bay. And they’re still having a hard time keeping up with orders for the shop’s newest creation.
“Her goal initially was to just sell 300 candles to raise awareness, but we are well over 3,000 as of this morning,” says Natalie Gorchynsky, mother of the shop’s owner....

Partnering for progress: Counties collaborate on child care solutions study

Employers across industries continue to struggle to find talent, and access to affordable, quality child care is one barrier to work that has become even more pronounced during the pandemic. Five counties recently partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Center for Customized Research and Services on a study aimed at identifying solutions and gathering data that could help lead to grant funding.
Calumet, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Outagamie and Winnebago counties collaborated on the study. Each county provided a list of its top 30 businesses in terms of number of employees, and those employers encouraged their workers to complete the survey...

Applications open for Project Growth grants
WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Children and Families (DCF) opened applications today for Project Growth, a $20 million grant program designed to help solve the challenges facing Wisconsin’s child care system and bolster the state’s economy.
“Strengthening Wisconsin’s child care system is critical to supporting families and boosting our economy,” said DCF Secretary Emilie Amundson. “When parents can’t find care that meets their family’s needs, they are unable to remain in the workforce. By bringing together businesses and child care programs, we can begin to build strong, sustainable partnerships that benefit everyone.”
