How to Weed Out the Bad Home Inspectors!

There will soon be a change to the licensing regime for home inspectors
in British Columbia. Rich Coleman, Minister Responsible for Housing,
announced in September that the Province will create a single professional standard for home inspectors,
which is intended to improve the licensing process.
At present there
are four organizations overseeing the accreditation for home inspectors,
all with different specifications in their licensing requirements. The
Provincial government’s revision to the process gives Consumer
Protection BC the authority to establish the education and training
requirements, test and license the home inspectors, implement a code of
ethics and take on a compliance and enforcement role.
This
move to establish a single professional standard comes after years of
consultation with consumers and industry stakeholders. A building
inspector is a valuable asset to a purchaser attempting to ascertain the
true cost of buying a home, and can provide assurances that a real
estate agent is not able to make. The implementation of a single
professional standard for education, testing and licensing will ensure a
benefit to homebuyers by having a consistent benchmark for home
inspector quality. The new standards are set to be implemented by the
end of 2015.
