NCC Remembers AME Retired Supervisor

Rev. Dr. Cecelia Williams Bryant

The Rev. Cecelia Williams Bryant, an African Methodist Episcopal Church bishop’s wife known for mentoring up-and-coming clergy and fostering prayer, died on Thursday (Sept. 26), her family announced.

Bryant, 77, was the episcopal supervisor for the AME districts that her husband, now-retired Bishop John R. Bryant, oversaw. She also was the mother of the Rev. Jamal Bryant, pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, a megachurch outside Atlanta, and the Rev. Thema Bryant, a Pepperdine University professor and former president of the American Psychological Association.

She lived in Baltimore, where she and her husband once served at Bethel AME Church for more than a dozen years, and was known for her support of women and as a model for ministers, men and women who eventually led churches individually or as co-pastors.

Please pray for the Bryant family in their time of bereavement.

Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue Celebrates 50 Years

The annual Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue drew Anglican Communion and Orthodox Church representatives from all over the world — from Europe to the Middle East, and from Africa to Australia.

The gathering convened at Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology for plenary meetings October 4–11. High-ranking bishops and theologians from many countries were in attendance, including Greece and Cyprus, Jerusalem and Antioch, as well as Romania and Georgia. The plenary meeting was hosted by the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at HCHC and held for the first time on the campus of HCHC.

A celebratory event on the evening of October 6, marked the only international celebration of the 50th anniversary of the dialogue. It was also the only event open to the public.

The International and Pan-Orthodox Dialogue between the Anglican Communion and the Orthodox Church is the oldest theological dialogue initiated and chaired by the Ecumenical Patriarchate since 1973 and includes all the Orthodox Churches.

Huffington Ecumenical Institute Benefactor Visits Holy Cross Campus

Mr. Michael Huffington, benefactor of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute (HEI), visited Holy Cross School of Theology on October 31. During his visit, Mr. Huffington had a meeting with President Demetri Katos and Rev. Gary Alexander, following which he also had an opportunity to see the progress made at the new HEI facility.

NCCC 2024 Advent Guide: 'Hope Is Near' Now Available for Free Download

As Advent begins, the First Sunday calls us into Hope. Hope isn’t the same as optimism. While optimism insists on silver linings, hope goes deeper, trusting in God’s presence even when outcomes seem bleak. Hope refuses to accept that what seems impossible to us is impossible for God. Where God is present, impossibility is absent.

This Advent season, may you find hope not in avoiding life’s challenges, but in seeing them within God’s vision of a transformed future. We at the North Carolina Council of Churches offer these devotions to turn your hearts toward the source of true hope, guiding you toward Christ’s coming promise.

Register Now for the Christian
Climate Training

Blessed Tomorrow and eight other denominations are offering a live, virtual Christian Climate Training on November 16, 2024, from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm ET / 8:30 am – 12:30 pm PT.

The majority of Americans are concerned about climate change. But, they think only half of those around them feel the same way. As a person of faith, you can help others see they’re not alone in their concern and invite them to take action

Christian Climate Training equips you with the knowledge, hands-on experience, and resources to speak and take action on climate change from a faith perspective—in your home, neighborhood, church, community, with policymakers, and beyond.

After the training, you’re invited to become part of the Blessed Tomorrow Climate Ambassador Community, which provides ongoing support, resources, events, and a vast community of Climate Ambassadors from across the U.S.

Prepare to Celebrate National 'Love Is' T-Shirt Day on Wednesday, November 13

Grace-Based Films (GBF) uses the power of film to share the gospel creatively while telling stories that remind us of our common humanity.

Next Wednesday is World Kindness Day. GBF asks you to join them in reminding the world of Bishop Michael Curry’s message of unselfish love by taking a picture of yourself wearing your ‘Love Over’ t-shirt and posting it on social media. Caption it with where you are in the US, as well as any message that is important to you, and please tag the post with @acaseforlovemovie so GBF’s social media person can amplify the messaging.

Some of you are connected to larger groups of people who now have the t-shirts, and GBF asks that you share this notification with them.

This message is more important than ever.  Help GBF continue working to be a small part of the light in these challenging times.
