The NCC mourns the loss of President Jimmy Carter, the nation’s 39th president, who died on December 29, 2024, at age 100. President Carter was a devout follower of Jesus Christ who introduced much of the nation to the term “born-again Christian.” From his early days on the family peanut farm in Plains, Ga. to his days in the White House and beyond, Carter’s decisions were guided in his love for Christ. On Thursday, January 9, the nation observed a National Day of Mourning for the late president, and NCC Project Coordinator Matt Markay had the unique opportunity to attend the State Funeral for President Carter at the Washington National Cathedral. Markay reflected on his experience and the life of President Carter, "Celebrating the life of President Carter is something I will never forget. Jimmy Carter embodied Micah 6:8. Carter did justice. He cared for the vulnerable in society by addressing homelessness, eradicating deadly diseases in Africa, and helping countries around the world conduct free and fair elections. Carter loved kindness. He would devote one week every year to building homes for Habitat for Humanity. Carter walked humbly. Nearly every Sunday, he would teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains and did so many times while he was president. May we all live out the teachings of Jesus, just as President Carter did during his lifetime." Carter's longtime friend whom he had appointed Ambassador to the United Nations, Rev. Andrew Young, gave the homily at the service. Having entered public life as a civil rights advocate, in 1957 Young joined NCC in New York as an associate director of the Youth Division of Christian Education. The 2025 National Day of Racial Healing is an annual observance that follows Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year, the ELCA will join the movement of racial healing for the church and the nation.
On Jan. 21, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Central Time, join a free online educational event that centers the voices of ELCA leaders of color. This event is open to all ELCA rostered ministers, lay leaders, and members, as well as the church’s affiliate organizations and ecumenical and interreligious partners. Learn more, browse speaker bios, and register today. Since 2017, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has hosted the National Day of Racial Healing, a day where all people can inspire collective action to build common ground for a more just and equitable society.
There will be events in 19 states geared around racial healing in hopes of building trust among people and cultivating seeds of racial equity. If there are no events in your state, feel free to join the virtual events broadcast nationally using the links on their website.

Petition on 28th Amendment | | | On January 27, 2020, Virginia became the 38th state to sign on to the ERA. Section 3 of the ERA states that it takes effect two years after its ratification when Virginia became the 38th state to sign on. By its own terms, then, the 28th Amendment went into force in January 2022. But the prior Archivist of the United States refused to publish the amendment. (Read more about this here.) On August 6, 2024, the American Bar Association (the largest voluntary membership group for lawyers in the WORLD) affirmed that the ERA has met all constitutional requirements and called on all forms of government to implement the 28th Amendment immediately.
