WCC Urges Caution with New Law
Passed by Ukrainian Rada

World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay and WCC moderator Bishop Dr Heinrich Bedford-Strohm are urging caution with regard to a law passed by the Ukrainian Rada which bans the activities of religious organizations associated with Russia in Ukraine.

“The government of Ukraine has the sovereign right and responsibility to defend the nation’s territorial integrity and to protect its citizens, even more so in the face of Russia’s illegal invasion and armed aggression,” said Pillay and Bedford-Strohm.

The World Council of Churches has consistently condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, and “we remain steadfast in that position,” they said. “Ukrainian authorities have a right to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, and to prosecute individuals guilty of crimes against the interests of Ukraine.”

At the same time, they said, “The WCC is deeply alarmed by the potential for unjustified collective punishment of an entire religious community and violation of the principles of freedom of religion or belief under a new law approved by the Ukrainian Rada on 20 August 2024.”

We pray alongside our Christian brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and especially those who continue to take refugee in the St. Porphyrius Orthodox Church and the Latin Family Catholic Church in Gaza after more than ten months of nearly constant bombardment, deprivation, and massive civilians deaths in Gaza.

Reach Newer Generations: 2024 National Student Conference

The World Student Christian Federation–U.S. (WSCF USA) invites students, young adults, campus ministers, and ecumenical partners to join them in Washington, D.C., October 3–6, for the 2024 National Student Conference, “Embodied Faith: Christian Students Organizing for a New World.”

This year's conference seeks to equip students and young adults with the tools and confidence to participate in movements for social change. Christians have a particular responsibility to work for liberation, justice, and peace as we remain grounded in our prophetic biblical and theological traditions.

From the WSFC website: "Join WSCF USA for a time of community building, learning, and worship under the guidance of 1 Corinthians 12:12–27. As we are each a part of Christ’s one body; we each have a role to play in creating a new world for all people. Empire desires division and isolation. We believe God has other plans. Let us resist together, as one body."
