Subject: NCC Climate Change newsletter - November 2020

Welcome to your monthly edition of our Climate Change newsletter!

As you may already know, last summer Northumberland County Council declared a climate emergency. Since then we have laid out clear objectives to help tackle climate change in Northumberland.

Cutting the council's carbon emissions in half by 2025.
Making Northumberland carbon neutral by 2030.

It’s not going to be easy, and we'll need everyone to get involved and do their bit to help reduce Northumberland’s carbon emissions. That’s why we’re bringing you useful tips on a monthly basis to help reduce your carbon footprint and save money while you’re at it.

Green fleet promise zero emissions

The council has begun replacing its fleet of small diesel vans with electric vehicles as it looks to ways of future proofing its fleet.

Seven Nissan e-NV200 vans have been purchased, with 40 more on order this year, to replace a fleet used to support the delivery of a wide range of services including the council’s highways, street lighting and neighbourhood services teams.

The vans have a range of up to 187 miles and can be rapidly charged in around an hour. On average, each electric van will save 3 tonnes of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of 136 mature broadleaf trees! Keep an eye out for our new ‘green’ vans on the roads.

Free Trees Collection Points Rescheduled

Following new national restrictions in England due to Covid-19, we have unfortunately had to rearrange our collection points for the free tree scheme. If you were successful in applying for a free tree with us, you should have received an email to update you. If you have not heard from us, please get in touch: climate@northumberland.gov.uk

New collection dates will operate from the same 11 locations from Tuesday 15 December until Friday 18 December. If you already booked a collection slot, we will stay true to your original booking location and time. If you are unable to collect your free tree on this new date, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will rearrange a more suitable collection point with you.

Northumberland to help nature thrive with green recovery plans

Progress is being made in Northumberland to help protect nature as part of the UK’s green recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Council has begun developing plans to help enhance biodiversity across the county through a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) Pilot, Northumberland Peat Partnership and the Great Northumberland Forest.

These new initiatives will set the foundation for the delivery of the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan, which aims to leave the environment in a better state for the next generation. They will also contribute to the Council’s ambition to make Northumberland a carbon neutral county by 2030 by protecting and enhancing the ability of our natural resources to act as carbon sinks.
