Welcome to your monthly edition of our Climate Change newsletter! Since declaring a climate emergency, Northumberland County Council have laid out clear objectives to help tackle climate change in the county:
Cutting the council's carbon emissions in half by 2025. Making Northumberland carbon neutral by 2030. |
We have set out a detailed action plan for the next few years to help give us the best opportunity to meet these ambitious goals, and how we can fight the climate emergency together. Look through our seven priority action areas for climate change.

Green Homes Grant: Local Authority Delivery
We’re working with E.ON to deliver £3.4m worth of energy efficiency improvements to homeowners in Northumberland in a bid to reduce fuel poverty and tackle the climate emergency. The funding will see 200 private properties retrofitted with air source heat pumps, solar PVs or external wall insulation over the coming months.
Eligible households must: • own their own property • have a household income of less than £30,000 • hold an EPC rating of D or below

Greener council buildings Further installation of solar panels at council sites are now complete, including Prudhoe Water World and County Hall. Our contractors are currently installing 297kW of solar panels at Wentworth Leisure Centre, which once complete, will equate to approximate 50tCO2 saved annually.

On-street EV chargers
Have you been thinking about investing in an electric vehicle (EV) but have nowhere to charge it at home? We want to hear from residents who don’t have off-street parking to help select areas that would benefit from on-street EV charge points.
Suggest a location near your home and we will collate responses which will be reviewed collectively to help inform potential future delivery in areas where demand is greatest. Unfortunately, requests cannot be responded to individually and there is no guarantee that an on-street EV charger will be installed as a result of completing this form.

EV Fleet
The council has added 13 Nissan e-NV200 electric vans and three Nissan Leaf cars to replace its fleet of small diesel vans and petrol cars as it looks to ways of future proofing its fleet. This is in addition to the seven electric vans we already have on the roads, with a further 31 on order.
The fleet is used to support the delivery of a wide range of services including the council’s highways, street lighting and neighbourhood services teams.
Our Neighbourhood Services team has also been testing an electric Caged Tipper conversion van (pictured) as part of their street collection service, which has received positive feedback. The more electric vehicles we have on the roads the better air quality we will have in Northumberland, not to mention the huge reduction in carbon emissions. If you’re thinking of going electric, feel free to get in touch to find out more about what we’re doing to support electric vehicle infrastructure in our county.
