We're getting your free trees ready for collection
The climate team has been working hard, sorting the free trees which arrived at our Blyth depot yesterday. Don’t forget to check your emails for your collection dates. Remember, there is still time to order your free tree for collection in November. There are two tree species available for small, medium and large sized gardens, as well as small planter-based shrubs available for those with limited garden space, balconies or rented properties.

These include:
  • Large garden: Wild cherry, English oak
  • Medium garden: Silver birch, Rowan
  • Small garden: Crab apple, Holly
  • Limited garden space: Box, Wild privet
Schools, community groups and town/parish councils can order hedge, copse or native harvest packs of up to 120 saplings.
Funding to support smaller-scale tree planting
The Great Northumberland Forest has received £725,000 from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)'s to help landowners in Northumberland create more diverse woodlands - whatever shape and size. The funding comes from the Government’s Nature for Climate Fund and will allow our Great Northumberland Forest team support landowners with the planning and planting of more trees. If you would like support in planting trees, you can reach the team at enquiries.forest@northumberland.gov.uk or by calling 01670 623 416.
Funding awarded from OZEV for more on-street EV chargepoints
We’re thrilled to announce that Northumberland County Council has been awarded £222,510 from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). This funding will go towards supporting our ambitions to create 75 new 11kW on-street charge points by 2023. These will particularly benefit residents with no access to private parking who therefore cannot have private charging points installed. This is expected to be the first round of three awards which will fund the installation of up to 225 on-street chargers across the county by 2025.
Green light for clean energy sector training and education hub in Blyth
Planning permission has been granted for a new £11million facility in Blyth which will create opportunities for thousands of young people and adults interested in working in the clean energy sector. The Energy Central Learning Hub will provide a range of state-of-the-art industrial training, education and STEM-related skills facilities, with construction set to start in October 2022 at Port of Blyth and due to be completed in winter 2023. The project is being funded by Northumberland County Council, HM Government Towns Fund and the North of Tyne Combined Authority and is part of the £70 million Energising Blyth Programme.
Climate change collaborative event: South East
Our face-to-face events are back and we want to gather your perspective about how we can work together to reach our net zero targets in Northumberland. We are pleased to inform you that we will be hosting a series of four collaborative climate change events across the county between November 2022 and May 2023 - one for the West, South East, Central and North. The events will be structured around three key topics that link to our climate challenges and solutions in Northumberland, and mirror a similar event being run with Council Members.

The topics include:
  • Renewables, energy efficiency and fuel poverty
  • Reducing transport emissions
  • Natural resources and land management
The first of these events will be on Wednesday 16, November, 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The location will be Blyth (venue TBC).
