Subject: Climate Action Northumberland: February update 🌳

Welcome to your monthly Climate Change update.
Northumberland County Council is committed to making our county carbon neutral by 2030 and w
e need everyone to do their bit to help reduce carbon emissions.

We're thrilled that we are on course to meet our 2025 deadline, achieved through decarbonising our 'fleet and heat' operations, solar energy generation on our buildings and County Hall carpark.

How can you help make a difference? 👇
Work to begin on flagship Clean Energy Hub in Blyth
We're excited to announce that work will begin this month to make way for the Energy Central Learning Hub at the Port of Blyth. The hub is part of the £70m Blyth regeneration programme that will revitalise the town over the next five years, delivering new jobs and learning opportunities, and helping to drive the clean energy revolution in the UK.

New buses and EV chargers
The North East successfully secured £19.5m of investment through the Levelling Up Fund for a Transport Decarbonisation package which will help the region deliver up to 52 new high-quality electric buses alongside 92 new Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers. It is hoped expanded EV charging infrastructure will encourage more people to consider switching to a zero-emission vehicle where possible.
Major cycling and walking funding
The Council has secured over £14.7m through the Government’s Levelling Up Fund for new cycling and walking routes for Tynedale and Bedlington - to make it easier, safer and greener for people to get around the county.

Plea over harmful balloon releases
The Council is appealing to the public to use other alternatives to balloon and lantern releases for events and memorials which can have a devastating impact on wildlife and the environment. The council is encouraging people to use other less damaging ways to pay tribute to a loved one such as planting a tree or flower bed, using jam jar lights, or organising a memorial walk for a chosen charity.

Grant: Up to £2,500 is available, per applicant, towards the cost of a fountain.

Applications: Welcome from all types of not-for-profit organisations who have identified a need and are well-placed to get the stakeholder involvement needed to make the project a success.
