Food waste trial gets underway
A food waste recycling trial is now underway in parts of Morpeth, Bedlington, Pegswood and some of the nearby villages. The new pilot scheme involves collecting the weekly food waste from around 4,500 households across four areas within the county. The food waste is being recycled at an anaerobic digestion plant where contents are processed to generate renewable energy and make a natural fertiliser for growing crops.
Two new solar farms have been approved
Permission has been granted for the construction, operation and management of solar farms on land at Low Horton Farm to the west of Blyth and land at Burnt House to the west of Bedlington which will accelerate our green energy generation. The proposed developments will provide a significant amount of electricity from a clean, renewable source which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions annually by around 24,000 tonnes and meet the energy needs of approximately 30,000 homes each year. Installers Bluefield Renewable Developments Ltd, plan to contribute around £350,000 for local community projects at each site where the panels will be located.
Construction of subsea cable facility for offshore wind farms
JDR has begun construction on its 69,000 sqm factory which will be operational by 2024. The £130m project will deliver vital subsea cable manufacturing technology to the offshore wind market and is currently providing 171 local jobs for the construction phase of the project. When complete, the facility will include a new catenary continuous vulcanisation (CCV) line, making it the only facility in the UK capable of full start-to-finish manufacturing of high voltage subsea cables for offshore wind farms to support the growing global renewable energy market.

Hexham Net Zero Fair
Hexham Town Council held its second Net Zero Fair at the Queens Hall and library with over 500 visitors attending – which is double the number of the first event! Stallholders at the fair included our Climate Change Team, Hexham Climate Café, Transition Tynedale, Hexham Space for Nature, Egger, Vattenfall, and Green Bee Hexham.

  • Time: 5:45pm - 7:30pm
  • Location: Headway Arts, Blyth, NE24 1BY
The event will be structured around three key topics that link to our climate challenges and solutions in Northumberland:
  • Renewables, energy efficiency and fuel poverty
  • Reducing transport emissions
  • Natural resources and land management
Ovington Parish tree day
Ovington Parish has held a tree day which involved tree maintenance for trees planted 2021 and also the planting of new sapplings. Families took part in a treasure trail where they took packs of trees, tree protection, a map and instructions and followed way markers to find where to plant the copses and hedgerows. On the way back they had to collect the way markers and find autumnal 'treasures'.

Have a sustainable Christmas
Did you know over Christmas we generate around 30% more waste than at other times of the year? A lot of this can be recycled or composted. Here are some tips on how you can waste less this Christmas.

Wrap gifts in recycled paper or fabric
The Council recycle all plain wrapping paper, but we cannot recycle any paper made with glitter or foil. Please remove all sticky tape from your used wrapping or opt for reusable alternatives such as fabric or gift bags. Don’t forget to clean residual dirt from your cardboard boxes before placing them in your recycling bin.

Send forest friendly cards
If you’re choosing to send Christmas cards this year, opt for cards that have the FSC logo or choose plantable cards that offer the gift of flowers. Paper cards can be recycled too! So long as they don’t have glitter or any other ‘bling’ they will be turned into cards for next Christmas!

Upcycle non-recyclables
Turn any foil, glittery or blingy Christmas cards and wrapping paper into gift tags or even a wreath for next year’s festive season!

Buy eco-friendly crackers or make your own
Cut down on single-use waste and buy reusable crackers that you can fill with your own gifts and jokes or get crafty and make your own! Here’s a great tutorial to get you started.

Shop sustainably
Shop local this festival season and contribute to your local economy. If you want to be super sustainable why not buy second hand or give homemade gifts. There are also loads of plastic-free toys available on the market today for little ones, and sustainable gifts to buy family.

From all the Climate Change team, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
