Subject: Things I Learned Shooting My Latest No-Budget Film

NO-BUDGET FILM SCHOOL
THIS WEEKEND!
Lessons From My New Film DriverX  Will Be Covered This Weekend!
On the set of DriverX
As you know, I just wrapped principal photography on my latest no-budget feature film--my fifth collaboration with award-winning writer/director Henry Barrial--DriverX. DriverX stars Patrick Fabian (Better Call Saul) and features Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine Nine), Oscar Nunez (The Office), Desmin Borges (You're The Worst), Travis Schultd (Scrubs), Randall Batinkoff (As Good As It Gets), Iqbal Theba (Glee), Max Gail (Barney Miller), Tanya Clarke (Banshee), and many more great actors.

As with all my previous films, everything I learn from making them--the tricks used and the mistakes made--goes into my classes.  Here are just a few of the things from DriverX that I will discuss in this weekend's class:

  • Using new tools like the Sony A7s, Odyssey 7Q+, Ronin M, FCPX, etc.
  • Getting name actors but only paying SAG Ultra-Low Budget Scale
  • Important new changes to the SAG ULB contract
  • Shooting with and without a filming permit in LA, and using a Grid Permit
  • The advantages and challenges of shooting at night
  • Shooting driving scenes (half our film was set in a moving car)
  • Going wireless--using wireless follow focus, wireless dimmers, wireless mics, a Teradek
  • Crew hiring strategies, plus who's absolutely necessary and who's optional
  • What I learned from casting over 50 speaking parts
  • The necessity of a start date and the tyranny of rushing into production
  • And so much more...
Don't. Miss. This. Class. I promise I will save you thousands of dollars and loads of heartache.  Use the Promo Code SUBS and save 20%--that's $50 off the stated price. Students with a valid ID and former NBFS students save even more.

Joshua Caldwell
NEW GUEST SPEAKER ANNOUNCED!

Layover Writer/Director Joshua Caldwell

I'm thrilled to announce my final guest speaker for the weekend. Filmmaker Joshua Caldwell will be joining us Sunday. Josh is well-known in the online world--he recently finished directing the series South Beach for Hulu. But he will be spending most of his time with us discussing the making of his feature film debut, Layover.  Layover caused quite a stir last year when it premiered at the prestigious Seattle Int'l. Film Festival and it was revealed that the budget was only $6,000!  Josh will go through how to design a $6k film, including where the $6k went and what they didn't spend money on, (hint: mostly everything...).
