LEARN THE NO-BUDGET SECRETS OF "DRIVERX"
The moment I've been working toward for the past 4 years is finally upon us. My self-financed, micro-budget feature DriverX will be opening next weekend in Los Angeles and New York (with a Sneak Preview in NYC early next week), and then playing in other cities in the coming weeks.
If you're here in LA, I've created a special night just for you! I'm calling it my No Budget Film School Night. Joining me will be special guest moderator Peter Broderick, along with DriverX writer/director Henry Barrial and lead actor Patrick Fabian (Howard Hamlin on AMC's Better Call Saul). This special screening is Wednesday, December 5th at 7:10pm at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica. We will concentrate our post-screening discussion on how the film was made and distributed on a micro-budget, lead by one of the preeminent figures in the no-budget filmmaking movement. Peter Broderick was the first person to recognize the emerging model used by micro-budget filmmakers working in the early 90's, and he wrote a series of seminal articles for Filmmaker Magazine that became the paradigm for future independent filmmakers. See below for more information on Peter and this special event. Tickets are available here.
For those of you in LA and New York, we've scheduled several other special screening events where we will be in attendance for Q&A's. And if you're not in one of the cities we're playing theatrically, you will be able to watch the film on VOD starting Nov. 30th. We'll give you a list of places to find us On Demand when we get closer to the opening.
And here is a list of the special event screenings we have scheduled:
NYC RED CARPET SNEAK PREVIEW - TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH |
| Cast and crew will be on hand in the Big Apple for our Red Carpet Sneak Preview at the IFC Center. We're super excited to announce our moderator for the Q&A will be none other than acclaimed playwright/actor/novelist Eric Bogosian (Talk Radio, subUrbia, Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll, Law & Order: Criminal Intent). He will be leading our discussion after the screening with the following folks from the movie:
- Patrick Fabian - Lead Actor
- Tanya Clarke - Lead Actress
- Desmin Borges - Actor
- Henry Barrial - Writer/Director
- Mark Stolaroff - Producer
- Tiffany Panhilason - Actress
- Mark Burnham - Actor
- Helen Rose - Musical Contributor
The screening starts at 7pm and we'll be there early for pictures and to mingle. Come mingle with us! Then stay for the Q&A and then hit the town with us afterwards. It's going to be fun!

LA OPENING NIGHT PREMIERE - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH
|
| We'll be jetting back to Los Angeles for our big LA Premiere with cast and crew and a reception at the theater. Because demand is so high for this, we're calling both our 7:10pm and 10pm screenings our premiere. We'll take pictures before the first show and then do pictures and a reception with drinks and appetizers between the two shows. That reception will start at around 9:20pm, so if you're coming to the 10pm show, come early and join us in the Mezzanine area of the Monica (until it reaches capacity).
We're thrilled to announce that our guest moderator for the evening will be Emmy Award-winning actor and producer Dan Bucatinsky (Scandal, 24: Legacy, The Comeback, The Post, Second Act). We will have many of our cast and crew in attendance, including: - Patrick Fabian - Lead Actor
- Tanya Clarke - Lead Actress
- Melissa Fumero - Actress
- Oscar Nunez - Actor
- Henry Barrial - Writer/Director
- Mark Stolaroff - Producer
- Daniel Lynn - DP
- Max Gail - Actor
- Nina Senicar - Actress
- Marvin Etzioni - Musical Contributor
- Vanessa Knight - Casting Director
- Tiffany Panhilason - Actress
And many, many others. The 7:10pm show is sold out, but there are still tickets for the 10pm show. This promises to be a rollicking night.

NO BUDGET FILM SCHOOL NIGHT - WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5TH
|
| For those of you who may not know, I have been making micro-budget films with Henry Barrial since I came on board his first feature Some Body as a producer back in 2000. At that time I was an executive at a company called Next Wave Films and we were giving finishing funds to exceptional low-budget features, including the first features of filmmakers Christopher Nolan and Joe Carnahan. The founder of Next Wave, and one of the key figures behind the scenes of the modern American Independent film movement of the early 90's was Peter Broderick. Peter is one of the smartest people in the independent film world and today is a sought-after distribution consultant. I'm thrilled to have him guest moderate the discussion after our screening on this night.
Back in 2005, Peter inspired me to create No Budget Film School, a series of classes I designed specifically for the micro-budget filmmaker. I have been teaching hundreds of filmmakers a year the fine art of no-budget filmmaking since that time, and I utilized many of the techniques I teach in my class in the making of DriverX. Peter will lead an edifying discussion focused on these techniques, and Henry Barrial, Patrick Fabian and myself will be on hand to reveal all those secrets. If you're interested in making a film yourself one day, you won't want to miss this screening. I promise, no budget-related question will go unanswered! And of course, we will be giving away more prizes, (because what would a screening be without some fun prizes to give away?!?).

As you can see, we're busy planning some fun nights and that's because, despite the fact the film will be available On Demand, I want you to come to the cinema to see it the way it was meant to be seen and heard. If you've been on my mailing list for awhile, you know how I feel about the theatrical experience and also about how, as independent filmmakers, we have to support each other and see these works in a theater. Now, it's a little different when I'm asking you to come to one of my movies, but that's why I've put together so many special screenings. I think you're going to really enjoy these nights, especially the No Budget Film School Night, where I'll have the opportunity to share what I've learned making this new film.
(And besides, I've got some prizes to unload!)
See you soon!
Best,
Mark
