Horns Up Hollywood!
Meet Prolific Filmmaker Bryan Poyser
Saturday, August 1st • 2pm PDT

As you may know, I went to the University of Texas in Austin (many, many years ago) and for years I've been on the committee of the Hollywood Seminar, our LA Alumni chapter's fundraising initiative to raise money for scholarships for UT film students' creative projects. We put together networking events, screenings (you might remember we screened DriverX for this), and also educational workshops and seminars every year.

This weekend we're proud to launch Horns Up Hollywood, a summer speaker series featuring talented UT alumni who are successfully writing in the film and television industry. We've lined up four talented writers for in-depth interviews--live via Zoom--where we'll focus on how they got started in the industry and their process (what they do, what it takes to do what they do). Then we'll do a little Anatomy of a Scene, where we'll delve into their creative process focusing on a scene from one of their works. You'll have the opportunity to read the scene, hear how it evolved, and then see the final result.

Our first seminar is this Saturday with one of my favorite filmmakers, writer/director Bryan Poyser. I've known Bryan for over 15 years and he's been a guest speaker in No Budget Film School. I'm a huge fan of his work, starting with his first feature, the no-budget Dear Pillow, which premiered in Slamdance in 2004 and garnered several awards, including a Someone To Watch Spirit Award nomination in 2005. I've shown clips from this tiny-budget film for years, demonstrating how to be bold and provocative in your writing.
Lovers of Hate Poster
He followed that film up with Lovers Of Hate, a $50,000 feature that premiered in Sundance in 2010 and was nominated for the Cassavetes Award at the 2011 Spirit Awards. His follow-up feature, Love & Air Sex, was a hilarious and criminally over-looked comedy starring Sara Paxton, Zach Cregger, Ashley Bell, and Addison Timlin.

He's also made short films for USA Network, directed a pilot for Comedy Central, and most recently, wrote an episode for the HBO series Room 104, which premieres in September. We will talk about all of this, and show clips and stills from his work. We'll send everyone the original script from a scene from Love & Air Sex, as well as the final script pages, and then show the finished scene. You'll get to see how a script evolves in the making of a film, and then how it becomes the final filmed product.

Bryan is an incredibly affable and articulate speaker, and teaches writing and directing at UT currently. He will share with you many pearls of wisdom working in both the trenches of micro-budget filmmaking and then also on studio fare. You won't want to miss this engaging conversation, and of course, you'll be able to ask whatever questions you have. And you can also check out the other speakers we have lined up in the series on the Eventbrite page.

Now, here's the good news. Each one of these seminars is only $5 for you because you're on my list. That's a 50% discount off the regular price, and remember, the Hollywood Seminar is a 501(c)(3) and all proceeds go to our scholarship fund. Just use the promo code NBFS (or click the button below, which already includes the discount). You can apply the discount towards all of the seminars.

We hope you'll join us this Saturday and on our other dates. Hook 'Em Horns! (Ok, couldn't resist...)
