Micro topography is any change in the forest elevation that is small enough to not show on a standard topographical map, yet holds valuable insights about the landscape structure.
Some things we explored in today’s lesson:
Why fall & spring are the ideal seasons to observe topography.
Examples of micro topography and the types of insights these landscape features can provide.
How forest elevation reveals navigational shortcuts.
Signs of past human use in a forest revealed by small changes in the forest floor.
How micro topography influences the growth patterns of plants.
I know the idea of micro topography may sound like the epitome of all things nerdy, but if you give it a chance I think you’ll find this area of study incredibly insightful and practical!
