Subject: New Video: Tuning Our Eyes To Micro Topography

Hey!

I just published a new video that demonstrates how observing small changes in elevation can help you effectively navigate the forest, identify ecological patterns & interpret the history of your local environment.

Check it out here!

Micro topography is any change in the forest elevation that is small enough to not show on a standard topographical map, yet holds valuable insights about the landscape structure.

Some things we explored in today’s lesson:

  • Why fall & spring are the ideal seasons to observe topography.

  • Examples of micro topography and the types of insights these landscape features can provide.

  • How forest elevation reveals navigational shortcuts.

  • Signs of past human use in a forest revealed by small changes in the forest floor.

  • How micro topography influences the growth patterns of plants.

I know the idea of micro topography may sound like the epitome of all things nerdy, but if you give it a chance I think you’ll find this area of study incredibly insightful and practical!
