Subject: New Video: How Pileated Woodpeckers Build Their Nests

Hey!

I just published a new video that shows how pileated woodpeckers excavate their nests and sleeping cavities.

Check it out here!

Pileated woodpeckers are a favorite woodpecker for many people because of their size and role as an indicator of healthy, mature forests.

I was lucky enough to watch them building a new nest recently and I’m excited to share some of the highlights with you.

In today’s nature video:

  • The fascinating use of shelf mushrooms in pileated nests.

  • Stages of pileated woodpecker nest construction.

  • Predicting nest locations based on forest characteristics.

  • Identifying males & females and their unique roles in nest construction.

  • Sounds used by pileated woodpeckers near their nest.

It was so much fun watching them do this and I got some great footage of this rarely seen behavior.
