Subject: Friend Latifa could be you or us. And something special on tonight!

Assalamu Alaykum Friend

In our work, we come across many saddening cases that reaffirm the importance of Zakat in our local community's context.

These cases demonstrate the importance of NZF's work in Australia and the significant and at times severe need of Zakat in our local community.

Take the example of our sister Latifa for instance (name changed).

Latifa migrated to Australia with her husband and child on a spouse visa with great expectations for their new life.

Sadly, not long after this move, her husband decided that he didn’t want to take part in this relationship anymore. He left Latifa and abandoned their child who had just crossed the tender age of 2.

With barely any English skills nor a dollar to her name to keep things going in their lives, Latifa lost hope in her ability to provide herself and her child basic needs in life. She was not entitled to any government support as a new migrant and so she could not afford to pay for any daily expenses, essentials or the rental home she was in.

During these times, she tried to reconcile with her husband to get some form of child support from him but things weren’t progressing for Latifa and her child.

Meanwhile, she maintained her connections with the local Muslim community who provided her the emotional support she needed to help her adapt to her new reality. Soon Latifa was referred by a community member to National Zakat Foundation so we could help ease her burdens. We got involved, and before long were able to help.

Read more about what we did, why, and how it changed Latifa's situation around.

In our fourth episode of our Ramadan Real Talk series tonight, we look at the important topic of social media, which often dominates our life today. Social media shapes our perceptions of things and the news we receive.

How should Muslims perceive the impact of social media, including the sort of culture it creates, in light of our worldview?

In this episode, we'll dive into a range of important issues, including:

  • The benefits and downfalls of Muslim social media

  • Creating powerful communities and movements

  • Influencers: The good, the bad, and the ugly

  • “You do you”: The “don’t judge” phenomenon

and more!

We're delighted to be hosting our esteemed sister Dalya Ayoub, and the episode will be hosted by sister Reem Khan.
