We’ve held two episodes of our Real Talk program that have delved into the problems and struggles faced by people in our community. Both brothers and sisters. Themselves and their families.

In some quarters there is an understandable level of frustrations when it comes to this issue, and we saw some of that in our second episode on Monday night. It was candid, honest, and for that reason, it was critical.

Together, we need to turn that energy into transformative change through education and intervention in our community.

For instance, the way we did for sister Halima, helping her get back up on her feet after she lost so much.

Halima was ecstatic when her spouse visa was granted and she could finally live with her husband in Australia.

But her dreams were shattered when she arrived at the airport and her husband was very rude and unloving towards her. Once she gave birth to their first child, he became more distant, started yelling at her and even beating her.

Below, we capture her story and it is a painful but important one to read. It also captures so well the impact that we CAN have by banding together as a community and being there for those impacted.

When Halima came to NZF, we assisted her through our Healing Forward program with bills, furniture and ongoing Financial Fortnightly Assistance. For Halima's child, NZF offered the Recite to Rise program so the child can continue their education.

There are many such stories that we come across in our work. And these are the lives we've been able to change through the power of our community's Zakat and Sadaqah.
