Last month our Service Partner Selma Cook from Sacred Balance in Victoria organised an event called 'Voices of Muslim Women'. Our Community Engagement Officer Sr Mujde attended this event on behalf of NZF and this was her thoughts from the day.
"It was such a beautiful event with a bunch of beautiful sisters who were brave enough to stand up in front of everyone and share their stories. There were some stand out moments for me, one in particular was the number of Muslim sisters incarcerated. Sr Khadija shared some facts on why some of these sisters are incarcerated and prefer to stay in jail, one reason was to escape domestic violence. They preferred to stay in prison rather than to come out and face the domestic violent situation they were in, as they didn't have any family or community to help support them. You can listen to Sr Khadija’s full talk here. Another story Sr Selma shared had almost everyone in tears, it was when Selma visited a Muslim sister incarcerated and in isolation. This emotionally touched everyone in the room. I highly recommend you listen to it here. Sr Selma’s events are always a delight to attend and I’m looking forward to future ones.” |
