Sisters are embracing Zakat, and it's just as well!
Assalamu Alaykum We often receive questions about Zakat issues related to our sisters in the community. Many brothers prefer to calculate on behalf of their wives, mothers, sisters and so forth.
Often times, sisters are okay with this, but increasingly we are seeing more sisters want to take control of their own Zakat. And this is something we encourage highly.
First, Zakat is an act of ‘ibadah (worship): none less than the third pillar of Islam!
Second, everything associated with it is ‘ibadah: learning how to calculate it, understanding rules around wealth, etc.
Third, it is a purification of the wealth of our sisters and (insha Allah) a reason for increase in it.
Why, then, should our sisters miss out? We encourage all sisters to engage in it: it generates a love for the deen and should be something more sisters seek to do.
We welcome questions from our sisters on this as it is as important a Pillar of Islam for women as it is for men.
Finally, we notice that many sisters are big supporters of ours: they know their Zakat is helping sisters facing domestic violence and other serious problems. We continue to welcome our sisters’ Zakat contributions, and urge you to consider NZF for Zakat against this year to help us continue our work here in Australia.
Wassalam, Munir Abdella
