When I asked him if this Zakat was for him or his wife, he said it was for both of them and he was paying it. He wanted to know if it was done correctly.
I had two questions for him - What was the weight of the Gold and whom did it belong to?
His answer was 70g and it belonged to his wife.
- How much of the money belonged to him and how much to his wife?
His answer was that it was his earnings, but he considered that the money belonged to both of them in their joint account.
I see this scenario quite often in our community. Two questions I have for you to think about.
Question 1: Should Zakat be calculated as a family, or as individuals?
Question 2: In the example above, would the Zakat amount be the same or different should they have calculated it individually?
I'd love to know your thoughts. This is an important aspect of Zakat and probably applies to many of you. Please reply to this email to let me know what you think the answers to the above questions might be or if you'd like me to explain this to you more.
