Out with 2018
2018 has been a good year for NZF, Alhamdulillah. We have seen a 22% increase in Zakat distributed since 2017 which shows there are more people understanding the importance of local Zakat!

This year, we saw the rise of another important question - Is Zakat just for the poor & needy?

When we speak about Zakat, almost in all conversations, a lot of emphasis is placed on the difficulties and hardships faced by the poor and needy alone, and how Zakat is there to attend to their needs.

But Subahanallah, Allah has made it clear in At Taubah verse 60,  that Zakat has been prescribed for not just the poor & needy, but 8 categories of Zakat receivers!

Not only that, the obligation of paying Zakat is not based on whether there is need or not. Rather it is obligatory upon believers to pay their Zakat as part as their belief. Zakat is not just a charity, it is a financial system ordained by Allah SWT that empowers the community in a holistic manner.

With that in mind, this year, we have held a number of events to increase awareness of such values to the Muslim community in Australia. We have been running events specifically for Zakat payers such as Muslim Money Matters and NZF Zakat Roadshow to educate the Muslims on importance of managing your wealth & the role of Zakat.

On the other hand, we have also been holding events such as Eyes Wide Shut, to raise awarness of various issues plaguing the community such domestic violence, homelessness, drugs addiction and many more, and the very important role that your Zakat plays in alleviating those affected by these issues.

The World Zakat Forum

The World Zakat Forum was held from 5th - 7th Dec 2018 in Malaysia. It was encouraging to see that Zakat organisations from countries around the world were in a similar phase, aiming to collaborate the understanding & learning of Zakat implementation to tackle issues that plague our community today. NZF UK also presented a paper on an analysis of Zakat  at the forum which was very well received.

NZF Australia has been accepted into the World Zakat Forum as the representative of Australia. With that, the forum now has 33 countries as members Alhamdulillah.

In short, Zakat is there to protect the Imaan of those who are the most vulnerable in our community
To understand how your Zakat helps, read the story of Aabir below

Aabir was coming out of prison in a few days. He has been in prison for nearly 2 years this time and his family had had enough. This was not the first time he was in prison for drugs, but it was the longest and his family decided they had to take matters into their own hands.

How NZF helped

While Aabir is in prison, NZF has been assisting the family in organising an accommodation for Aabir, helping them with the funds needed to organise for Aabir to leave his home city for a short period to break the cycle. The family is now ready to receive Aabir when he comes out of prison in a couple of weeks insha Allah.

One by one, this is how we use your Zakat to empower individuals & families struggling with various issues to be able to collectively empower our community as a whole.
We are so grateful for your support and faith in our work and please keep us in your prayers to continue serving the Muslim community in Australia
