Many of us have read Oliver Twist when we were children and felt very bad about the treatment that Oliver and other orphans received in that Workhouse orphanage. It was abusive, unhygienic, and brutal. This was the case in 19th century Victorian England.
But Islam gave us different teaching. In the Quran, Allah (SWT) complained to the Quraysh about their treatment of orphans:
"No! But you do not honour the orphan". (Surah Al-Fajr: 17)
In choosing an orphan as His Messenger, Allah (SWT) raised the status of orphans everywhere. The Quran revolutionised their treatment and made caring for orphans a compulsory part of the religion.
We need to dignify our local orphans. We need to give them the chance that they deserve, just like every other child in Australia.
Dedicate this Ramadan in helping and honouring orphans in Australia.
Help us raise $50,000 this Ramadan and our partner, Crescent Wealth, has promised to contribute an additional $10,000.
Let's give the orphans in our communities the hope they are entitled to.
