Assalamualaikum
Allah subhanahu wata'ala says in the Holy Qur'an in Sura Munafiqoon Ayat 10, the meaning of which is
"And spend (in charity) of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says: "My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakat) of my wealth, and be among the righteous [i.e. perform Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah)]."
Our aim at the National Zakat Foundation is to help YOU fulfill your Zakat obligations before you depart this world. May Allah make this enormous responsibility easy for us. Ameen.
You have two Zakat obligations.
Zakat ul Fitr
Zakat ul Fitr is fixed at $12 per person this year including children. If you have 5 people in your household, then you pay $60.
Zakat ul Fitr MUST be paid before Eid prayers. The earlier you pay in these days the better so we can ensure it reaches the needy prior to the prayers.
Zakat Al Maal
Zakat Al Maal is 2.5% of your savings that you pay every 12 months from the date you passed the Nisab (595g of Silver, currently valued $422). Everyone should have a fixed date which is their Zakat anniversary, on which 2.5% of total savings is paid as Zakat.
The Sunnah is to pay your Zakat locally in the place that you live in.
If you were unaware of how to pay Zakat Al Maal, and do not have an anniversary date, don't worry this is quite common. There is no better night to pick than tonight the 27th of Ramadan and perform this beautiful act of Ibadah to calculate and pay your Zakat tonight.
Going forward, your anniversary will then be the 27th of Ramadan yearly.
