Assalamu Alaykum Friend
Last week I had the chance to be in Madinah – the city of our beloved Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him).
Friend It was an incredible feeling to be back in the city where I’ve spent so much time but which we’ve been locked out of for the last 18 months. May Allah give the chance to everyone to visit His blessed house in Makkah and the Prophet’s city in Madinah in their lifetime.
As I read the daily adhkar (remembrances) here in Madinah, I reflected on the du’a that the Prophet himself would make for protection from challenges of ill health: both of the body and mind. It made me think of the attitudes towards mental health in our community and how critical it is that we think deeply about why we hold them.
in what is a big month for us, we’ve been running an important online campaign on mental health and challenging the taboos that surround it as a community. As a community we need to rethink our understanding of mental health, and remove the misconceptions that relate to it being a lack of “Imaan” or similar.
We’ve invited two esteemed members of our community to join us for our Real Talk episode this evening. We really look forward to hosting sisters Nasreen and Hanan – you can find the details below.
We’re also going to be doing ongoing activities around domestic violence, given November 25 will be the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2021.
Finally, we're looking forward to launching our Dignified Ending program soon. This has been something we've been planning for some time and will look at supporting our community through funeral and burial process.
From the exorbitant costs of burials to the lack of support people have in the process, there are a heap of issues that we'll seek to educate the community on and support it with. We look forward to sharing more on this with you in the coming weeks.
I pray Allah keeps us safe in this post-lockdown phase and that we are able to resume helping each other as a community in a way that Islam asks us to do.
