Happy New Year!

"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hi Friend, Here's wishing you a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting and participating in the Yoganama journey last year. It was a pleasure connecting with you in 2020 and I look forward to strengthening our relationship in 2021.

I also thought I would share with you some of my favorite things. I hope you'll find as much value in them as I did:

2 ESSENTIAL HABITS TO BUILD THIS YEAR

MEDITATE OFTEN

As much as we care about our physical fitness, it is also important to work on our mental fitness. And Meditation is the tool that helps us train our mind, a tool that we must use every day for our long term health. With regular meditation, we train ourselves in concentration, awareness, as well as in retaining our composure in difficult and stressful times. In doing all this, we change the very structure of our brain, and become more efficient, at living our everyday life.

REDUCE SCREENTIME

Set a goal to not look at mobile or laptop screens at least 30-45 mins before bedtime. Because this impacts the quality of your sleep. Think of your sleep as a time when your body dips into a magical river that heals and regenerates your body. So, when you wake up you are ready for life. If you look at your screens before bedtime, you will not have a fully immersive experience in this magical river because blue light interferes with our sleep quality.

SPEND 0 MINUTES DOING THIS

ENVYING

Envying is harmful to our mental health and it also limits our potential. By envying others we get latched on to their goals and lose sight of our own purpose and vision. Therefore, when struck with envy, shift your thinking. Ask yourself, "what can I learn from this?" Then take a few minutes with eyes closed, finding kindness and admiration for those who are doing well. Replace envy with positive feelings to transform your whole life.

2 BOOKS I HIGHLY RECOMMEND

ATOMIC HABITS - JAMES CLEAR

This is a powerful book to help you set new habits. I would call it a well-structured course on Goal Setting. He focuses on breaking down your goals into mini-goals and laying down the process to make them achievable. It's truly transformational.

YOGA SUTRAS - SAGE PATANJALI

There are many translations of the Sutras and it is best if you read some excerpts and choose for yourself. But to get you started, here are some recommendations. Complete beginners can look at the book Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda. Those with some knowledge about the Sutras can consider Four Chapters on Freedom by Swami Satyananda Saraswati. And those who are very well versed with them can look at interpretations by Swami Veda Bharti and Edwin Bryant.

1 QUOTE TO LIVE BY

Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.

Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I hope you find this useful. I am working on a lot of initiatives in 2021 and will be in touch much more frequently. Wishing you lots of good health and happiness as we begin this new year.
