Subject: This is not the life you ordered

As you might have seen on our Facebook page, Emma spent a lot of Friday afternoon in the school counsellor's office with one of her kids getting some strategies to manage anxiety. Their appointment went overtime, and another girl was asked to wait for an extra 15 minutes.

This student has an intellectual disability, and when Emma and her daughter left the office, she scrambled up off the floor of the corridor in a flurry and handed over this picture. She said, "I made this for you! It will be okay."

We were moved beyond words about this. Compassion, support, distraction, stress-management and kindness wrapped up in one gorgeous gesture. What thoughtfulness and insight.

And what a wonderful use of the 15 minutes she had to wait — instead of getting annoyed or impatient, woe-is-me or frustrated (like so many of us do when we’re held up by other people).

Imagine if, each time any of us had an unexpected delay, we filled it with acts of kindness. An appreciative email or message. A quick call to check in on someone. Paying a compliment. Helping with something.

Surely it’s better to use the nooks and crannies of our day for good, rather than stewing fruitlessly over Candy Crush or scrolling absently through social media one more time…

Sometimes a spanner is thrown in the works. We can let the interruption shut us down, or take the spanner and make something beautiful.
