Anxiety Disorders in School-Aged Children and What I Can Do About It?
February 1 - 28, 2019  /   Nancy Nybergh
3 Graduate or In-service Credit (45 hours)

What can I do about students that experience anxiety and why is it important for me to know? This course will allow you to explore what the nature of anxiety is as well as take a closer look at Anxiety Disorders with school-age children. We will also look at what happens to us when we experience anxiety as well as what happens to the brain to explain some of the behaviors. Additionally, we look at the interrelationship of anxiety, stress and worry and the role of imagination. Lastly, we will look at interventions both outside and inside the classroom.

Participants will research the essential features of eight (8) childhood anxiety disorders and more common anxiety related to learning; Describe the implication and effects of anxiety on classroom performance and school attendance; Develop at least one evidence-based strategy that can be brought into the classroom to help teach students to begin to calm and self-regulate.

This course will be helpful for all educators K-12, ELA, Social Studies, Math, Science, ESL, Special Education, Art and Music, Physical Education, School Psychologist, Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, Speech/Language teachers and therapist, OT & PTs. Common Core Learning Standards are addressed.

Interactive Education Tools Across the Curriculum
February 1 - 28, 2019   /  Jen Cartica
3 In-service Credit (45 hours)

Interactive education tools can provide a dynamic learning experience that enhances student learning. This course is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to navigate and evaluate a variety of interactive sites across the curriculum. The implementation of these sites, as well as other sites discussed in the forum, can then increase student interest, motivation, and connections with the subjects. Participants will navigate and evaluate educational websites, and reflect upon their effectiveness and ability to enhance student learning in the classroom.

The course is appropriate for all grade levels, K-12, and all subjects including Math, Science, Technology, Social Studies and English Language Arts.

The Meaning of Mindfulness
February 1 - 28, 2019
(Wednesday) 10am-6pm / Remaining hours online

This course will help all educators satisfy the new K-12 NY State Mental Health mandate. Have you ever driven somewhere realizing you have no recollection of what happened along the way? Been introduced to someone and moments later can’t recall their name? Where is our mind during moments like these, and how can bringing more awareness to ourselves lead to improvements in well being? Studies show the benefits of mindfulness include stress reduction, emotional balance, and greater focus. This course explores how mindfulness can promote these states, and how it can foster greater resilience, especially during challenging times.
