Subject: Mounted Patrol Foundation - animal fire evacuation update

Generous support pours in for
animal fire evacuation efforts

Last Wednesday, August 26, the Mounted Patrol Foundation sent out an urgent email requesting donations for the SMC Large Animal Evacuation Group (LAEG), to support their efforts in rescuing horses and other animals endangered by the fires. As a result of this request, we have received to date over $9,000 in donations, from 59 donors mostly from the San Francisco Bay Area, but some from as far away as New Jersey, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Colorado. The matching funds committed by the Mounted Patrol Foundation brings the total to over $18,000. Each day more donations come in and everyone - citizens, horse owners, and the LAEG itself - is eternally grateful for this incredible support.

San Mateo County Large Animal Evacuation Group
(SMC LAEG)

The SMC Large Animal Evacuation Group is an all-volunteer group that has received certified training in animal handling and evacuation and whose members have been designated by the county as Disaster Service Workers. The Group is activated by the County when necessary and works closely with the County’s Office of Emergency Services.

Unfortunately, the Group has no public funding and relies entirely on donations and its members’ generosity, with their time, equipment and money. As of now, LAEG has identified $13,000 in immediate needs that we will be funding. These are expenses LAEG has incurred in the current fire evacuation efforts. As further funds come in, we will address LAEG’s additional needs as necessary and then look to LAEG’s longer-term needs, one of which is a storage facility to store and stage supplies in preparation for the next disaster.

Current needs to be funded:

- Four Chip Reader/Scanners to read chips
implanted on animals                                                       $    996
- Hay                                                                                 $ 1,300
- Water Trailer to haul water to facilities
without power or working wells                                         $ 5,597
- Portable corral panels                                                     $   940
- Reimbursement of gas expenses for
volunteer horse evacuation personnel:                             $ 3,000
- Vet supplies (local veterinarians have donated
their time to support LAEG and evacuated animals;
this would reimburse them for their supplies consumed),
halters, ID bands                                                               $ 1,165

As we mentioned in our previous e-mail, LAEG does not have the ability to accept tax deductible donations.  However, the Mounted Patrol Foundation, as a 501(c)(3) organization, can and will accept donations on their behalf. In addition, the Foundation is adding its support of this effort by matching contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000, which is close to being achieved. Donations are tax-deductible to the amount permitted by law and may be made via check or PayPal to the Mounted Patrol Foundation.

(WCF)

The WCF is requesting donations to their Local Disaster Relief Fund to help with regional fire emergencies, with a current focus on large animal rescue and relief due to the CZU Lightning Complex fires in San Mateo County and Santa Cruz Counties. WCF is supporting the feed and care of over 50 horses currently evacuated to the Mounted Patrol and Junior Riders facilities in Woodside.

County-wide animal rescue efforts

We wanted to share with you the number of animals evacuated during the CZU Lightning Strikes Fire, which started on August 16. The fire is now 39% contained, and we hope that the fire crews will further the containment each day. It is amazing what the Large Animal Evacuation Group was able to do in order to save animals’ lives. At one point during the evacuations, the Group sent crews and trailers into Santa Cruz County to help them with their evacuations, as any good neighbor would do. There still remain areas within San Mateo County to which residents cannot return, due to fire and fallen trees. Their evacuated animals will continue in the care of the Large Animal Evacuation Group until they can safely be returned home.

There are two groups currently active in evacuating animals - LAEG with 75 volunteers working on evacuation and care and feeding of large animals; and the Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA. To date they have rescued a total of 1622 animals, large, domestic and wild. The breakdown is as follows:

Large Animals

314 horses (includes 2 stallions)
10 miniature horses
1 Clydesdale horse
1 Shire horse
101 pigs
7 steers
1 pony
518 cattle

9 donkeys (includes 3 wild donkeys)
6 miniature donkeys

81 sheep
16 llamas
12 alpacas
1 camel (Willy)
97 goats
15 ducks
300 turkeys

Large animals have been transported to barns, ranches and holding facilities on the north coast, Pacifica, Woodside and Daly City.

1 Amazon parrot
1 cockatoo
41 cats (3 returned to owners)
20 dogs (2 returned to owners)
1 rabbit
2 bearded dragons
2 geckos
2 ball pythons
1 king snake

Domestic dogs and cats are currently being held at:
County Animal Shelter
12 Airport Boulevard
San Mateo, CA

Wild Animals

4 ducks
7 geese
5 mourning doves
15 squirrels

Wild animals are being cared for at the County Shelter and PHS/SPCA.

We thank all our donors for their immediate and generous outpouring of support, and we want to encourage everyone to think about disaster planning and what resources are vital.

THANK YOU!
