The equinox of March has powerful meaning in many cultures. For many in the northern hemisphere, it is known as the vernal equinox—the turn of the seasons as well as the reference point for figuring out the date of Easter. In the Philippines as well as most other Christian countries, for instance, Easter is figured as the first full moon following this event.
In other countries, the vernal equinox is actually New Year’s Day in their traditional calendars. In a number of Arab states, it is celebrated as Mother’s Day. In still others, it has long been considered a local holiday.
Whatever the precise name given to the March equinox, the unifying theme in celebrations around the world has largely been one of renewal and birth. Spring, the new year, Easter, maternal love—all of these things signal the warmth of life and renewal. This March, we implore you not to forget to share those sentiments with the ones you love, to celebrate life and its constant renewal with the ones you consider your reasons for being.
