Subject: Why we CANNOT and SHOULD NOT relax our focus of "Making the Cross Accessible".

As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable . . .

1 CORINTHIANS 12:20-22

In 1982, Rev. Charlie and Debbie Chivers recognized the need for ministry to the community of people with disabilities. Over the last 40 years, many families and individuals served by Special Touch Ministry have shared their desire to find a church that understands their unique needs and welcomes them.

During this same time, changes in society and policy have encouraged accessibility and inclusion into many areas of the public, American, life. With the passing of the ADA, in 1990, people with disabilities have more access to jobs, schools and transportation. Institutions shut down, giving way to local disability inclusive programs and services. More people with disabilities are now living independently and participating in their local communities... and attending church.

A Focus on the Family article, written only two years ago, entitled 'When Disabilities aren't Welcome at Church' shows that, on the positive side, many congregations are successfully welcoming families impacted by disability. It also shows there is room for improvement. Inclusion of people with disabilities into the Body of Christ MUST continue to be encouraged, promoted, and supported.

Jesus is hope for everyBODY!

We CANNOT and SHOULD NOT relax our focus of "Making the Cross Accessible".

Special Touch Ministry is here to help.

The Disability Friendly Church (DFC) Program is designed to equip local church leaders and staff to reach people with disabilities.

Disability-Friendly Churches are a safe haven to people with disabilities in their community. With a strong Spirit of Accommodation and services designed to meet their unique needs, these churches are letting families and individuals know that THIS CHURCH CARES!
