Subject: Increasing Access Doesn't Need to be Complicated

Over the past few years, churches have been making great strides in welcoming people impacted by disability, but as we look at the following statistics, we still have a ways to go.

Roughly 65 million people in America and over 1 billion people worldwide have a disability.

That translates to 1 in 5 families or at least 15% of every community is impacted by disability.

Disability inclusion doesn't need to be complicated. Increasing access means creating an environment that can be used by all people including those who have disabilities.

Let's take one example. Your church is located in an area that receives significant snowfall each year. Which do you shovel first, the ramp or the stairs? Let's just think about this a second. If you shovel the ramp first, can't everyone use it?

When we talk about accessibility, people often assume we mean making a building accessible to wheelchair use and don't think beyond that. Accessibility begins with a mindset... giving thought to how we can provide welcoming access to all people.

As STM founder, Rev. Charlie Chivers always said, "Accessibility begins with a Spirit of Accommodation." Making the church accessible to people with disabilities makes it accessible to everyone... this NEVER cuts other people out!

Your prayers and financial support help us equip churches and ministries in welcoming access to all people.
