The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?" ~Exodus 4:11
August 21, 2022 is recognized by the Assemblies of God as Disability Awareness Sunday.
The Assemblies of God believes:
God determines human abilities and disabilities
people with disabilities, like everyone else, are platforms for the demonstration of His power to heal OR His power to use weakness to display His strength
that the Great Commission includes both welcoming those with disabilities in church functions and worship AND discipling and equipping people with disabilities to use their gifts to build up the body of Christ
Much of Disability ministry in the church is relational by nature.
It is recognizing that all people— no matter what combination of God-given abilities or disabilities we possess— have hopes, and desires... just like everyone else.
But our greatest need is for God himself.
Three things you can do for those impacted by disability:
Pray specifically for individuals and families impacted by disability in your church and community.
Be their friend. By reaching out to people with disabilities and their families with practical supports and encouragement, God’s power and goodness can be demonstrated in tangible ways.
Welcome people with disabilities into your church body. Start a special needs ministry, support group, or outreach program for those impacted by disability. .
God made every body, in his image, with a plan and a purpose for them. Serving people with disabilities is a balance of understanding and validating the struggle and seeing the potential, God's greater plan and purpose, though it.
