TWO VIEWS OF THE 1930s

Photographs of the Great Depression taken by the men and women of the Farm Security Administration are well known. Perhaps the most influential, documentary photographer of an earlier period was Jacob Riis. We would argue that "The Working Man" (c.1937) is reflective of Riis' style and we present it as a tribute to him.
This appears to be an actual gang assault in progress.  If so, it is representative of the violence of the 1930s as a result of Prohibition and the economic dislocations caused by the Great Depression.  "Gangsters" was taken in Pennsylvania (c.1932). See more images from our 1930s collection.
