THE KUMBH MELA

The Kumbh Mela represents the largest, peaceful gathering of humanity in the world at any one place and at any time.  This ritual bathing pilgrimage in India is sometimes attended by over 100 million people. DPI has numerous photos of Indian religious celebrations, but they pale in comparison to a Kumbh Mela.  We thank our newest, contributing photojournalist Ashesh Shah, who is based in Mumbai, for his coverage of the Kumbh Mela held in Timbak (Nashik) in August 1992.
Ritual bathing is fundamental to pilgrims at a Kumbh Mela.  Many pilgrims save their money for years to be able to afford transportation.  The importance of religion in the daily lives of Indians should not be underestimated.  It is manifest in many ways as one travels throughout India.
