| | THE DUST BOWL
Day turns into night as a "Black Northern" dust storm hits Liberal, Kansas in May 1934. Liberal is located just over the border from the Oklahoma panhandle which was at the epicenter of the "Dust Bowl". What seem to be imperfections in this photo are not that at all. You are actually viewing the soil particles as they flew through the air, landed on the camera's lens and even infiltrated the camera body so as to land on the film inside. Below is "Oklahoma-Kansas Dust Bowl", the Memorial Day storm of May 30, 1939. Blowing soil can be seen in front of the camera's lens. The "dirty thirties" not only led to economic dislocation as people moved from the affected area, but death from pneumonia as a result of the dust storms was common.
